Almost 500,000 years ago - far earlier than scientists had previously assumed - our early human relatives were already putting together wooden structures.
In a paper in Nature, researchers from the University of Liverpool and Aberystwyth University describe excavations at Kalambo Falls in Zambia where exceptionally well-preserved timber was uncovered.
The material has been dated to at least 476,000 years ago, a period that predates the evolution of modern humans, Homo sapiens.
Soon after the initial find, Professor Larry Barham of the University of Liverpool and colleagues recognised several worked wooden items: a wedge, a digging stick, a log that had been cut using tools, and a branch featuring a purposeful notch.
This degree of woodworking goes well beyond what was long considered feasible for hominins living so deep in prehistory. The waterlogged setting at Kalambo Falls is what kept these objects from rotting away.
Human ancestors working with wood
What we understand about early humans largely comes from stone tools, mainly because stone endures over vast spans of time. Timber, by contrast, typically decomposes and disappears.
Before this discovery, the clearest signs of early hominin use of wood - or of tools used on wood - were largely confined to evidence linked to fire, digging sticks, or spears. The Kalambo Falls discoveries broaden that picture substantially.
They indicate that some early hominins, possibly Homo heidelbergensis, knew how to fashion timber and connect logs together. That pushes us to rethink both their technical skill and their inventiveness.
“This find has changed how I think about our early ancestors. Forget the label ‘Stone Age,’ look at what these people were doing: they made something new, and large, from wood,” Professor Barham enthused.
“They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something they’d never seen before, something that had never previously existed.”
Dating early human wooden structures at Kalambo Falls
Wood that survives from nearly half a million years ago is exceptionally uncommon. To establish the age with confidence, the team had to use techniques that go beyond more familiar approaches.
“At this great age, putting a date on finds is very challenging and we used luminescence dating to do this. These new dating methods have far reaching implications – allowing us to date much further back in time, to piece together sites that give us a glimpse into human evolution,” explained Professor Geoff Duller from Aberystwyth University.
“The site at Kalambo Falls had been excavated back in the 1960s when similar pieces of wood were recovered, but they were unable to date them, so the true significance of the site was unclear until now.”
The results from these dating methods place the wooden structures firmly in a very distant period.
With the timing pinned down, researchers can better interpret how early humans chose raw materials, organised multi-step tasks, and responded to local conditions long before modern humans existed.
Importance of this discovery
Some earlier perspectives pictured human technological development as a straightforward climb from the simple to the sophisticated, implying that early hominins lacked much originality.
The evidence from Kalambo Falls pushes back against that. These ancient people were not merely making do with whatever happened to be at hand.
Instead, they modified wood intentionally and produced something with an underlying structure - behaviour that points to forethought and an ability to plan ahead.
Crucially, the interest is not only in the tools involved, but in what those tools helped produce. The logs were shaped into forms that required practical knowledge of how timber behaves.
They also seem to have understood that particular pieces of wood, once cut and fitted together, could form stable surfaces or supports. This kind of planning and execution was taking place far earlier than many researchers had believed possible.
“Stone Age” label no longer applies
Referring to this time simply as the “Stone Age” may inadvertently minimise the importance of other materials. Stone dominates the archaeological record because it survives.
Wood decays, which leaves major gaps in what we can see of everyday life in deep prehistory. Only in unusual environments - such as the waterlogged conditions at Kalambo Falls - can timber persist across so many thousands of centuries.
Kalambo Falls underlines that familiar labels may need reconsideration. Early humans likely made use of a much wider range of resources than the stone record alone suggests, and many wooden creations may simply have vanished as they decomposed.
With this direct evidence now in hand, it is clear that early hominins were not dependent solely on stone. They employed wood to produce tools, platforms, and other constructions that helped shape how they lived.
How early humans worked with wood
Although timber does not last like stone, it offers clear advantages: it can be shaped in many ways and is generally easier to work. For these early builders, wood would have been a readily available and well-understood material.
They appear to have known what to cut, how to notch branches, and how to make practical items. That level of know-how suggests a longer tradition of woodworking than the archaeological record has typically been able to reveal.
How they handled wood may also have affected the ways they hunted, gathered food, or put together places to live.
Kalambo Falls therefore brings into view activities that are usually hidden from us, sealed off by time because the organic materials involved so rarely survive.
Wood, tools, and human evolution
Overall, the study indicates that human technology and culture did not advance along a single, narrow path. People were finding workable solutions to problems far earlier than many had thought.
The Kalambo Falls wooden structure encourages a more open view of early human capabilities.
Even in a period when brains were smaller and modern humans had not yet emerged, early hominins could still reshape their surroundings to suit their needs.
This discovery on its own does not overturn the entire broader narrative, but it does add important texture to it. Early humans did more than flake stone - they used the materials around them, including wood, to make something deliberate and lasting.
In a field that has often underestimated such distant ancestors, the Kalambo Falls evidence suggests they merit more recognition than they have traditionally received.
