Modernisation under way at Augusto de Oliveira Salvação Municipal Airport

Americana City Council reported this week that the infrastructure and modernisation works at the “Augusto de Oliveira Salvação” Municipal Airport are progressing, with the earthworks now nearing completion. This stage prepares the site for the widening of the take-off and landing runway.

The intervention forms part of a project to expand the terminal’s operational capacity, enabling the airport to handle larger general aviation aircraft, rated up to code 2C - a category that includes aircraft up to the size of the ATR 42.

Alongside the earthworks, the programme includes embankment works for the runway end safety areas (RESAs) at runway threshold 12, preparation of the runway side areas, and construction of drainage channels. The next phase, expected to begin within the next 30 days, is the widening of the main runway.

Runway and airfield safety improvements (RESA, PAPI, lighting and markings)

At this stage, the works also cover the widening of the take-off and landing runway, rehabilitation of the runway strip and the aircraft apron, installation of the runway end safety areas (RESAs), drainage works, new airfield lighting, and horizontal and vertical signage, as well as a lit beacon and a windsock.

A Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system will also be installed at both runway thresholds, providing greater safety during landing operations, particularly at night.

Approvals, funding and delivery of the works

The detailed design packages were prepared and approved by Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) in 2025. Authorisation for the start of construction was issued at the end of April this year, and the works began in May.

Investment in this first stage is approximately R$ 16 million, funded by the National Civil Aviation Fund (FNAC), linked to the Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor). The work order was signed in 2025 by Mayor Chico Sardelli and the then minister Silvio Costa Filho. The funding was secured through coordination by federal deputy Cezinha de Madureira, following a request put forward by councillor Levi Rossi.

Construction is being carried out by the Consórcio Aeroporto Americana, which won the tender and is made up of Talude Construções S.A. and Converd Construção Civil Ltda. Americana City Council, through the Department of Works and Urban Services (Sosu), is monitoring and inspecting delivery.

The Secretary of Works and Urban Services, Adriano Alvarenga Camargo Neves, highlighted the importance of expanding the airport for Americana and the surrounding area. “The Airport is in a strategic location and, with the expansion, it will provide a space for support and safety for the commercial hub. Improving the infrastructure and modernising Americana Airport is an achievement and will be very important in promoting and boosting the economic development of the municipality and the entire region,” he said.
