IC20 works completed after 20 months: what has changed

After 20 months, the roadworks on the IC20 have been completed. The IC20 links Almada to Costa da Caparica and provides a connection to the 25 de Abril Bridge.

The project set out to widen the roughly four-kilometre stretch between the Centro Sul roundabout and the A33 slip road, near Universidade Nova, while also making access to the 25 de Abril Bridge easier.

What has changed on the IC20?

For drivers travelling Costa da Caparica–Lisbon, there is now a new tunnel and a viaduct that allow a direct route to the area known as the “garrafão” of the 25 de Abril Bridge. “This was one of the council’s demands from the very first moment the central government announced this intervention, as compensation for the impacts and disruption this work caused in the municipality,” the statement says.

The route has also been altered for anyone coming from Almada and aiming to reach the Centro Sul roundabout towards the bridge. Access is now made via the roundabout next to the Monumento aos Trabalhadores da Indústria Naval - the Hospital junction.

The IC20 now has four lanes in each direction between the IC20 junction and the Faculty of Science and Technology junction (Caparica).

Finally, new crossings have also been created for pedestrians and for people travelling by bicycle or e-scooter, alongside upgrades around the university area, Pragal and the Hospital junction - where a lift has been installed to support people with reduced mobility.
