Mirai Ningen Sentakuki: the AI-powered human washing machine being developed in Osaka

What sounds like a scene from a science-fiction film is currently being turned into reality in Osaka. One company is developing a technology that challenges the traditional shower: a fully automated body-washing machine that cleans, dries, monitors you - and uses artificial intelligence to adapt to the person inside.

The “human washing machine”: how the futuristic bathroom system works

The device is called “Mirai Ningen Sentakuki” - roughly, a washing machine for the human of the future. Visually, it resembles a compact wellness pod: you step in, sit down, and the machine takes over.

The process sounds surprisingly straightforward. Once the pod seals, it fills with water and a system of fine microbubbles kicks in. At the same time, sensors collect data about the body’s condition and use it to adjust temperature, pressure and the interior atmosphere.

Microbubbles instead of a shower head: what happens inside

At the core of the system is microbubble technology. Rather than relying on a conventional shower spray, the capsule uses ultra-fine air-and-water bubbles.

  • Microscopic bubbles settle across the skin’s surface,
  • loosen dirt particles and sebum,
  • deliver a very thorough clean without harsh rubbing,
  • and feel more like gentle fizzing than a strong water jet.

This approach is already familiar from high-end wellness treatments and some medical baths. In the capsule, it is automated and paired with sensor technology. The aim is a wash that doesn’t just get you clean, but also feels pleasant and individually tuned.

More than hygiene: the capsule measures your physical state

The most intriguing element may be the built-in biometrics. While the wash cycle runs, the machine continuously records data such as:

  • heart rate
  • potentially skin temperature
  • stress and relaxation indicators (indirectly via pulse and response patterns)
  • changes in certain vital parameters over time

An AI software layer then processes these values. It assesses how the body is responding and adjusts the programme accordingly. If someone appears stressed, for instance, the system might switch to warmer water, gentler spray intensity, calming lighting and soft ambient sounds.

From an Expo prototype to a market-ready capsule

Notably, the concept itself is not brand new. Back in the 1970s, an early idea of a human washing machine was presented at the Expo in Osaka. At the time, it remained a futuristic prototype: the technology was too crude, too expensive and not practical for everyday use.

Today, several key building blocks have changed:

  • sensors have become tiny, accurate and affordable,
  • artificial intelligence can identify patterns within health data,
  • microbubble and pump technology is far quieter and more efficient,
  • and control electronics now fit into compact housings.

That progress makes it possible to turn what once looked like pure science fiction into a real product - one that could, in time, find a place in day-to-day life.

Three functions in one: shower, spa and health monitor

The developers’ idea is to combine three areas within a single capsule.

  • Body cleansing - a thorough wash without manual scrubbing.
  • Relaxation - a spa-like environment with light, sound and tailored temperature.
  • Checking body metrics - long-term evaluation of vital data.

That mix targets multiple audiences: people short on time, technology enthusiasts, those who need support with personal care, as well as hotels, wellness venues or hospitals that want standardised yet personalised washing routines.

Drying included: fully finished in 15 minutes

Once the cleaning phase ends, the second act begins: drying. The person stays seated in the capsule while an integrated system blows warm air or fine airflow streams over the body.

The full sequence - stepping in, cleaning, caring, drying and stepping out - is intended to take about a quarter of an hour. No towel, no hairdryer, no wet floor. For people with limited mobility, or for those in small city flats, that could be a practical advantage.

Will the capsule make it into German bathrooms?

For now, the technology is still at an early stage. Plenty of questions remain unanswered: How noisy is the system? How much water and electricity does it use? What effect does intensive microbubble cleaning have on the skin over the long term? And, above all, how does the price compare with a normal shower?

Even so, the project points to a possible direction for future bathrooms - including in Europe:

  • In care homes, residents could be washed more safely and with greater dignity.
  • In hospitals, vital data could be documented automatically during hygiene routines.
  • In business hotels, the capsule could serve as a premium feature for frequent travellers.

Whether private households in Germany will, in a few years’ time, install a “human washing machine” instead of a shower enclosure remains uncertain. Moving from a trade-show attraction to a mass-market product is, as experience shows, a major leap - particularly in sanitary technology.

Opportunities and risks of the new hygiene technology

The benefits are obvious: less effort for the user, potentially gentler cleansing, built-in health monitoring and a strong comfort factor. For family carers or professional care staff, the physical strain could be reduced significantly.

At the same time, new risks emerge:

  • Data protection: health data is highly sensitive. Who stores it, and who analyses it?
  • Reliance on technology: if the capsule fails, the hygiene routine comes to a stop.
  • Maintenance: filters, nozzles and sensors need regular cleaning and checks.
  • Cost: purchase and repairs are likely to be far more expensive than a standard shower at first.

There is also a very human question: will users actually feel comfortable inside a closed capsule, or will it feel claustrophobic? In Western countries, in particular, some people may be wary of fully automated, enclosed systems.

What terms like microbubbles and biometric sensors actually mean

When people hear “microbubbles”, they often imagine ordinary air bubbles. Technically, it is more complex than that: the bubbles are so small that they remain suspended in water for longer and can get very close to the skin. That increases the contact area, making it easier to lift away dirt particles. Similar methods are already used in some medical applications to clean wounds gently.

The capsule’s biometric sensors work, in principle, much like fitness bands or smartwatches. They record pulse patterns, skin responses and other signals. Combined with AI algorithms, they can detect patterns - such as typical signs of tension or fatigue. From there, the machine decides which programme is most beneficial at that moment.

How everyday life could change with a human washing machine

Imagine this scenario: the capsule sits in the bathroom, connected to a smartwatch and a digital patient record. In the morning, it detects that the heart rate is higher than usual and sleep was poor. The machine selects a gentler programme with calming light and subtle music, reduces water pressure and extends the relaxation phase.

In care settings, staff could see how well residents respond to particular washing programmes, whether the pulse rises unusually, or whether someone regularly shows signs of stress. A routine task like washing would suddenly become part of a fine-grained health-monitoring system.

Whether this picture becomes reality depends on many factors: user acceptance, legal requirements, costs - and whether people are willing to share the intimacy of bathing with so much technology. The Japanese “human washing machine”, at the very least, shows just how radically our view of the humble shower enclosure could change.
