Japan’s “Washing Machine for People”: Mirai Ningen Sentakuki and the Shower of the Future

More and more people are turning on the shower less often - because they are short on time, because they want to reduce their environmental impact, and also because new technology is proposing completely different ways to handle personal hygiene. In Japan, a “washing machine for people” is currently attracting attention: a sealed capsule designed to handle an entire wash cycle on your behalf.

Why we are showering less in the first place

Surveys in Europe and the United States have shown a clear shift over the past few years: a daily shower is no longer seen as non-negotiable. Dermatologists caution against washing too frequently, energy prices have risen, and saving water has long since become a mainstream concern.

Japan’s “washing machine for people”

The Japanese company Science Co. is developing a system called “Mirai Ningen Sentakuki”, roughly meaning “washing machine for the person of the future”. The concept is a sealed pod that you sit inside, somewhere between an oversized massage chair and a compact sauna.

Once you are inside, the cycle runs fully automatically. The capsule fills with water and triggers a system that produces millions of tiny microbubbles, intended to clean the body without you having to soap up or scrub.

The developers promise a complete washing and drying process in around 15 minutes - with no effort required from the user, and tailored to the individual’s physical condition.

How the microbubble technology works

Microbubbles are already used in certain wellness treatments. They are so small that they can penetrate pores and help loosen dirt particles. That means far less mechanical friction is needed - in other words, less rubbing and brushing.

Inside the capsule, the idea is taken further:

  • ultra-fine bubbles are meant to cleanse the skin gently
  • the water temperature is adjusted automatically
  • the pressure and direction of the flow can change

The aim is thorough cleaning without constant exposure of skin and mucous membranes to harsh cleansing agents.

The bathroom becomes a health monitoring station

The machine is intended to do more than wash - it is also designed to collect data at the same time. The capsule contains numerous sensors that record physical readings, such as heart rate. In the longer term, measurements could also include pulse variability, skin perfusion, or signs of stress.

Built-in AI analyses this information in real time and modifies the wash accordingly. If the system detects stress, it may provide warmer water, gentler water movement, calmer lighting, and perhaps quieter sounds. If someone appears tired, it could switch to a more invigorating setting.

What fitness bands and smartwatches do today could happen incidentally while you wash tomorrow - turning the shower into a health hub.

Personalised wellness instead of a standard shower head

According to the developers, the machine can control parameters including the following:

The concept itself is not entirely new. At the Osaka Expo in the 1970s, a kind of “bathing machine” was presented as a vision of the future. At the time, however, the technology fell far short of what is possible today: powerful sensors, computing capacity and AI were missing.

Now the idea is returning with very different capabilities. Computing power has become tiny, sensors are inexpensive, and the health sector is investing heavily in digital data. That combination could make an old future dream suddenly achievable.

Will the capsule replace the daily shower?

Whether such pods will ever become common in ordinary homes remains uncertain. For now, the system is more suited to hotels, wellness venues, care homes or hospitals. People with limited mobility, in particular, could benefit from an automated wash that works without significant physical effort.

More realistic early use cases include:

  • premium hotel suites offering guests a “future bathroom”
  • first-class airport lounges where travellers can get completely refreshed in 15 minutes
  • rehabilitation centres and care facilities where patients no longer need to be laboriously lifted into baths

At home, these systems could at least replace certain showers - for instance, when the goal is a quick clean after sport or a relaxing evening ritual.

How hygienic is it really?

The developers’ ambition is high: total cleanliness in a short space of time. Whether that holds up in practice depends on several factors - including capsule maintenance, filter quality and how residual moisture inside the system is managed. Hygiene becomes especially crucial when the unit is used by multiple people.

Dermatologists also point out that “clean” does not mean stripping away every natural oil on the skin. Microbubble technology could even be an advantage here, because it may require fewer aggressive surfactants. How effectively it removes sweat, bacteria and odours in day-to-day life, however, will only become clear through independent testing.

Showering less, smarter care: what does that mean for us?

If the move towards less frequent showering continues, alternatives will matter more. Alongside dry shampoos, washcloths or quick washes at the sink, high-tech solutions are now appearing that combine multiple functions: cleaning, relaxation and health monitoring.

If you are using a classic shower less often, a considered care routine can still work well:

  • Targeted cleansing of heavily used areas of the body on “non-shower” days.
  • Gentle care products that do not damage the skin barrier.
  • Thoughtful choices of sports and everyday clothing that manage sweat more effectively.
  • Occasional wellness sessions, whether in a sauna, at a spa - or, in future, perhaps in a capsule like this.

Risks, limitations and unanswered questions

As futuristic as it sounds, several issues remain unresolved. Handling sensitive health data in the bathroom places strict demands on privacy and cyber security. Who stores the data, who can access it, and can it be linked with other profiles - such as health insurance apps?

There are also practical considerations: how loud is a machine like this? How much electricity does it use? Can it be installed in typical homes without rebuilding the entire bathroom? Ultimately, these details will help determine whether the vision becomes a mass-market product or remains a novelty for high-tech hotels.

The trend away from frequent, traditional showers, by contrast, looks set to stay. Between rising costs, environmental concerns and new technical possibilities, a different approach to personal care is slowly taking shape: less frequent, more deliberate, more personalised - and perhaps one day genuinely inside a “washing machine for people”.
