How to Fix a Screw Spinning in an Enlarged Hole with a Toothpick

When a screw spins without biting, the issue is usually the enlarged hole rather than the entire fitting. With a few toothpick pieces, the right filler, and enough drying time, you can restore the fixing and bring firmness back to the bracket or support.

Why does the screw spin freely when the hole becomes too large?

A screw holds because its threads press into and grip the surrounding material. If the hole crumbles, widens, or loses friction, the thread can no longer bite into the base, and the tightness gradually disappears.

This is common with aged timber, weak masonry, a dried-out wall plug, or a hole drilled with a bit that is larger than it should be. Before forcing it further, remove the screw, clear out the hole, and check whether there is visible dust, play, or cracking.

Typical signs the hole has lost support include:

  • Spinning: the screw turns, but it neither advances nor tightens.

  • a chemical anchor or a larger wall plug where there is constant weight.

How can you make the repair last longer?
