Archaeological studies suggest it served a military and logistical purpose, enabling quicker movement between urban centres and supporting the transport of people, goods and troops.

How did ancient engineering make it so durable?

The bridge was built from enormous stone blocks fitted together with great precision. Although the stones can look merely stacked, specialists believe many of the pieces were dressed to improve how they interlocked.

Smaller stones likely filled some of the gaps, increasing the overall stability. This approach helped the bridge endure for thousands of years with virtually no major structural changes.
