Complete Darkness in the Bedroom Could Protect Your Brain

That small glow, however, could harm your brain over the long term.

New research suggests that complete darkness in the bedroom plays a far greater part in our mental health than previously thought. Not only does sleep itself become deeper and more stable. The brain also functions differently when it is not disturbed by light, with consequences for mood, memory and even the risk of certain conditions.

Why bedroom light causes more harm than we think

Many people sleep with standby lights, streetlights outside the window or a nightlight. It is practical, feels reassuring and seems harmless. Research presents a different picture.

A 2019 study by Monash University in Melbourne found that even low levels of light during sleep disrupt melatonin production. This hormone tells the body that it is night-time and prepares it for sleep. When light reaches the retina, the body reduces its release.

A 2025 meta-analysis of artificial light at night goes further still. Researchers found evidence that sustained exposure to too much light after sunset:

  • disrupts the circadian rhythm;
  • may raise the risk of metabolic disorders such as obesity or diabetes;
  • is associated with mood fluctuations and depressive symptoms.

The reason is that our bodies operate on a 24-hour cycle. Light is the most important cue for this internal clock. When brightness remains present throughout the night, the system begins to falter – slightly, but every night.

Complete darkness: a reset for the brain and mind

Given these risks, research has turned to the opposite question: what happens when sleep takes place in genuine total darkness? An international research group examined measurement data and health information from people whose bedrooms had different levels of brightness.

The findings, published in 2025, were strikingly clear. People who sleep in very dark rooms report depressive symptoms less often and rate their mental health considerably more positively.

The researchers regard darkness as a kind of “night-time rehabilitation” for the brain. While we sleep, repair processes take place: cells clear away waste products, nerve cells organise information and the immune system works at full capacity. Light interferes with this process in subtle yet measurable ways.

Darkness, by contrast, supports three core functions of the sleeping brain:

  • Healing: Cells regenerate more efficiently and stress hormones decrease.
  • Restoration: Energy balance and hormone levels return to a natural state.
  • Balance: The central nervous system reorders stimuli and emotions, helping to stabilise internal equilibrium.

What happens in the brain when the light goes out

It becomes particularly interesting when we look at how the brain responds to darkness. Neuroscientist David Eagleman explains that, as light levels fall, the brain’s “map” shifts.

In bright conditions, the brain is heavily occupied with visual impressions. As it gets darker, less input arrives through the eyes. The brain’s visual area recedes while other regions become more active, including those responsible for hearing, touch and smell.

The intriguing side effect is that the brain does not want to leave the visual centre unused. Dreams appear to be a kind of “activity programme” that keeps this region active. According to Eagleman, dreams are not simply colourful images; they serve several purposes:

  • They help to organise and consolidate memories.
  • They connect experiences with emotions and soften emotional peaks.
  • They train the brain to deal with new, sometimes absurd, situations.

Sleeping in complete darkness allows the brain to run this dream mode without interruption. Broken REM periods – the stages of sleep in which most dreams occur – are, by contrast, linked with irritability, concentration difficulties and emotional instability.

Practical steps: how dark your bedroom should really be

The theory sounds convincing, but in reality streetlights, flashing standby indicators and alarm-clock displays can all get in the way. Most of these issues can be addressed with relatively little effort.

A short checklist for genuine darkness

  • Darken the windows: Thick curtains or blinds block street lighting, illuminated signs and the full moon.
  • Switch off standby lights: Use extension leads with switches so light sources can be disconnected completely overnight.
  • Change your alarm clock: Choose models without a bright display or turn the display towards the wall.
  • Rethink the nightlight: Consider whether a much dimmer, warm light at close range would be enough – or whether, after a few nights, none may be needed at all.
  • Try a sleep mask: For people with bright bedrooms or when travelling, it can be a simple solution.

Many people feel uncomfortable in a pitch-black room. This is often linked to childhood experiences, a loss of control and the feeling of being vulnerable. In that case, darkness does not feel calming to the mind, but threatening.

The move towards darker sleep therefore does not have to be drastic. Anyone afraid of total darkness can reduce the light gradually:

  • start with a very dim nightlight in a warm, reddish shade;
  • lower the brightness further after a few nights;
  • use a timer to switch the light off automatically after 30–60 minutes.

This lets the brain become accustomed to the new situation slowly. Over time, inner tension often decreases too, as sleep becomes more restful and the positive effects become noticeable.

How darkness interacts with other areas of life

It is also worth considering combined effects. Someone who darkens only their bedroom but uses their phone until immediately before sleep is still exposed to a great deal of blue light. This light signals “daytime” to the brain and also suppresses melatonin.

Darkness works best alongside regular bedtimes and a calm evening routine. This might include a short walk after sunset, reading under warm lighting or quiet music. Together, these create a clear pattern: the body connects certain signals with the transition into night.

Conversely, people already under greater strain – such as shift workers or people with depression – may benefit particularly from dark nights. Their internal clock is often already under pressure. Every hour of sleep in genuine darkness gives the system a better chance to regain stability.

When the mind does not switch off at night

Many people say that their thoughts really begin racing in the dark: problems, to-do lists and worries. In that situation, the advice to “make it even darker” can sound paradoxical. This is precisely where research on dreams and internal processing becomes relevant.

Giving the brain calm, dark nights on a regular basis may improve emotional organisation over the long term. Night-time rumination rarely eases overnight, but the pattern can gradually change: the body learns to associate bed and darkness with restoration and recovery, rather than alarm and constant thinking.

One useful addition is to set aside fixed “worry time” during the day. For instance, taking 15 minutes in the afternoon to focus deliberately on worries and write them down signals to the brain that there is a planned place for problems – and that night is not responsible for them. Combined with a dark bedroom and a regular sleep rhythm, this simple approach can relieve a surprising amount of pressure from the system.
