A landmark piece of infrastructure is reshaping Brazil’s North East as a vital defence against its historic drought nears completion. Construction of the Water Belt has reached 92% execution, an intervention designed to secure the region’s water supply.

How does this new artificial canal work?

The canal stretches for 145 km and crosses the territory using gravity-fed flow. Through this engineering approach, water is carried directly from the Jati Dam without the need for continuous pumping. In practice, the system operates like a liquid motorway, reinforcing the population’s security.

Built to be resilient, the route combines open channels with modern tunnels and siphons. This uninterrupted flow reaches the headwaters of the Cariús River, helping to stabilise areas considered critical. The plan splits work into five specific lots, distributed geographically across the region. Lots one, two and five have already been fully completed by the workforce.
