Porto City Council restores original traffic directions on Ceuta Street and Almada Street

In a statement published today on porto.pt, the council explains that the temporary one-way changes introduced on the western side of the city centre-put in place because of construction works on the Metro’s Pink Line (St Bento – House of Music), which began in 2021 and is now nearing completion-will be undone from this Monday.

According to the executive led by Pedro Duarte (PSD/CDS-PP/IL coalition), downhill traffic will again be permitted along the full length of Almada Street and on Ramalho Ortigão Street (between Almada Street and Allies Avenue). At the same time, Ceuta Street and Guilherme Gomes Fernandes Square will return to an uphill, one-way layout, restoring the original directions.

To match these adjustments, the council says that road markings and all related signs and traffic lights will be changed back between Gomes Teixeira Square and Allies Avenue.

Additional BUS lanes and a continuous public-transport corridor

With the reversal in place, the right-hand lane on Ceuta Street will be set aside for public transport, adding 500 metres of dedicated space.

The council also notes that a new BUS lane will be introduced on Restauração Street, between Alberto Aires Gouveia Street and Martyrs of the Fatherland Square, and within Martyrs of the Fatherland Square itself-providing a further 700 metres.

In addition, the tram corridor on Clérigos Street will be formally designated as a BUS lane, creating a continuous inbound public-transport route into Allies Avenue starting from St Anthony’s Hospital.

Measures follow earlier reversals on the eastern side

These steps follow other reversals already agreed and carried out on the eastern side of the city centre, with traffic arrangements returning to their previous format on Moreira Street, Firmeza Street and Fernandes Tomás Street.
