Brazilian Army adds armoured Caterpillar 416F2 backhoe loader developed by Arsenal de Guerra de Río

The Brazilian Army has added an armoured backhoe loader to its operational inventory, strengthening protection for its engineering assets in higher-risk environments. The machine, a Caterpillar 416F2, was handed over on 27 March to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion (School), already fitted with a ballistic protection kit developed in Brazil.

Arsenal de Guerra de Río programme to nationalise armour for engineering vehicles

The work is being led by the Arsenal de Guerra de Río (AGR) and sits within a wider effort focused on domestic production and the adaptation of armour for engineering vehicles, with an emphasis on safeguarding crews during sensitive operations.

This is the second solution produced by AGR under the programme. The first project was the armouring of the Caterpillar 924H wheel loader, unveiled in 2022, which marked the start of adapting civilian platforms for use in more demanding operational scenarios.

Design and development of the ballistic protection kit

Development of the armour kits involves AGR’s Engineering Projects Section and its Industrial Division, using advanced digital modelling and engineering software. The process also includes the application of specific metal alloys, aiming to balance ballistic protection with the machine’s performance.

Operational requirement and planned expansion

The programme requirement originated with the Directorate of Engineering Material (DME), which identified the need to increase protection for assets employed in real-world operations. The initiative is expected to extend to other platforms, including multi-purpose mini skid steers.

Integration challenges and operational use

One of the project’s main challenges is integrating the armour without degrading operator visibility or the functionality of onboard systems. Unlike traditional military vehicles, engineering equipment depends on precision and mobility, creating additional requirements for the development effort.

In practical terms, fitting the armouring kits increases the ability to operate during tasks such as route clearance, obstacle removal, and supporting troops in urban areas or under threat-while providing improved safety for operators.

With more than 250 years of history, the Arsenal de Guerra de Río reinforces its role within the Defence Industrial Base by delivering solutions aligned with the Brazilian Army’s operational needs, strengthening its contribution to equipment modernisation and the development of new capabilities.
