More and more households are questioning traditional firewood and turning to a fuel that was mocked for years: highly compressed wood briquettes. These dense blocks aim to produce noticeably more heat from less material, while also taking up less storage space and being kinder to the chimney.
What’s really behind the “new” wood briquettes
These “new” logs are essentially a familiar idea that has been refined: wood briquettes made from compressed offcuts. Rather than splitting whole trunks, manufacturers use sawdust, planer shavings and other leftovers from sawmills and joinery workshops.
The residues are pressed together under extremely high pressure-without glue, adhesives or other chemical additives. The lignin that occurs naturally in the wood fibres acts like a binding agent, holding everything together. The result is very dense, uniform briquettes, typically shaped as cylinders or in a “beech-log format”.

Getting the stove started the right way
Most briquettes don’t catch as quickly as thin kindling, but they burn more evenly once they’re going. The following method is widely used for a clean start:
- place 2–3 eco firelighters in the stove
- stack thin kindling or a smaller piece of briquette on top
- light the firelighters and open the air controls wide at first
- once you have a stable flame, add one or two large briquettes
If you load large amounts too early, you waste energy and can overload the firebox. It also makes sense to follow the manufacturer’s guidance on the maximum fuel weight per load.
Caution: temperatures can become very high
Because briquettes deliver a lot of energy in a small space, stove temperatures can rise quickly. With older models that don’t have a temperature display, a simple stove thermometer on the door or flue pipe is worthwhile. If the temperature sits in the red zone for long periods, material damage becomes a risk.

Sawdust and shavings become a useful energy source rather than being disposed of or used in lower-grade applications. The market is expanding fast, and quality varies widely. The following points help when choosing:
- stated moisture content (ideally under 10 per cent)
- origin of the raw material (certified sources, and ideally no tropical wood)
- shape stability: briquettes shouldn’t crumble when handled
- clear labelling showing no chemical additives
When trying a new type, it’s sensible to start with a small quantity and watch how it behaves in your own stove: How quickly does it light? How long do the embers last? How much ash is left? That’s the best way to find the right option for your needs.
How briquettes change day-to-day heating
Heating with compressed briquettes tends to be more predictable: you can estimate fairly accurately how long a given amount will last for a particular room size. That helps when budgeting and managing your stock.
At the same time, one principle remains unchanged: anyone heating with wood-whatever the form-has responsibilities. A suitable stove, correct operation and regular checks by a chimney sweep ensure the system not only provides strong heat, but also stays safe and as clean as possible.
