During everyday shower use, many households start to notice the spray getting steadily weaker and the holes in the shower head looking different. In most situations, this shift is caused by limescale build-up, which is common in areas where the water contains a high level of minerals. Knowing how these deposits develop inside the pipework and in the shower itself makes it easier to prevent damage, keep water pressure consistent, and avoid wasting both water and energy.
How does limescale form in the pipe and in the shower?
Limescale in a shower is a mineral deposit-mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium-carried in the water supply. Where hard water is common, these minerals are present in higher concentrations and they stick more readily to the inner surfaces of plumbing.
As water is heated, some of these compounds separate out and attach to the pipe walls and to parts of the shower, gradually creating a hard, crust-like layer. With electric showers, frequent heating tends to accelerate the build-up, particularly if the water temperature is kept high for extended periods.

If the following symptoms begin to appear regularly, it is a warning that internal scaling is progressing and that surface cleaning alone is no longer enough:

How to reduce limescale build-up and know when it is time to replace the shower
A light monthly clean of the shower head, plus a deeper clean every 3 or 4 months, helps keep limescale under control. Where possible, remove the part, soak it in a suitable descaling solution, and clear the holes using a soft brush-steps that often extend the shower’s working life considerably.
