Why Your Shower Loses Pressure Over Time and How to Clean the Showerhead Holes

A drop in shower pressure does not automatically mean the unit has failed. In many cases, the issue is simply that the tiny holes in the showerhead spray plate are partially blocked by limescale, sand and other sediment, which cuts the water’s flow rate.

Why does the shower lose pressure over time?

With everyday use, minerals carried in the water gradually build up in the small openings where the spray exits. As those points clog, the flow becomes uneven, the shower feels weak and the pressure seems lower.

Before you buy a replacement, it is worth cleaning the spray plate safely, as the blockage is often right at the outlet. The job is straightforward, but you must switch off the circuit breaker first to avoid electric shocks and other risks while handling the shower.

The most common signs usually look like this:

  • Jets: they come out skewed, weak, or stop altogether from some holes.
  • Limescale: pale crusts form around the water outlets.
  • Brush: soft bristles lift grime without widening the holes.
  • Circuit breaker: it must be turned off before any cleaning.
  • Technician: needed when the fault is coming from the pipework.

What do the showerhead holes have to do with the flow rate?

The showerhead is the end point of the water supply, and its many small holes spread the stream so a wider area is covered evenly. When those channels narrow or close, the water loses distribution.

That is why “low pressure” can simply be water trying to pass through fewer outlets. Rather than forcing dirt further inside with sharp objects, the better approach is to dissolve the deposits and protect the holes in the showerhead spray plate.

How do you clean the showerhead spray plate safely?

Start by turning off the bathroom circuit breaker, and make sure the shower is cold before touching any parts. If your model allows it, remove the spray plate and prepare a mix of white vinegar and warm water.

Soak before you brush

The grime needs to soften first. Vinegar helps loosen mineral deposits that have built up on the spray outlets. After soaking, a soft brush can remove what is left without distorting the openings.

Leave the spray plate submerged for a few hours, then brush the outlets gently using light strokes. Rinse thoroughly, refit the part, switch the circuit breaker back on only at the end, and test the spray with care.

Clean in this order:

  • switch off the circuit breaker before taking anything apart;
  • remove the spray plate only if your model allows it;
  • soak it in white vinegar and warm water for a few hours;
  • brush with soft bristles, without using needles;
  • rinse, refit, and check the flow rate.

Why shouldn’t you poke the holes with a needle?

Using a needle can feel like the fastest option, but it may widen the outlet, distort the spray pattern and push debris further into the part. That can worsen distribution and shorten the shower’s service life.

It is also best to avoid knives, wire, hard sticks and corrosive products, as these can damage plastic, rubber or metal. Proper cleaning relies on soaking time, a soft brush and patience, not force.

Avoid these maintenance mistakes:

  • puncturing the outlets with a needle or wire;
  • using harsh products without the manufacturer’s guidance;
  • cleaning the shower while it is still connected to power;
  • forcing old or dried-out parts during disassembly;
  • switching the circuit breaker back on before everything is correctly seated.

When does low pressure point to a bigger problem?

If you have tried the usual tips for clearing showerhead holes and improving pressure, check whether the issue persists after cleaning. If every tap in the home has a low flow rate, the cause may be in the pipework.

A low water tank level, a partially closed stopcock, old pipes or internal blockages call for a technical inspection-especially if the drop is sudden. In situations like these, replacing the shower may not fix anything, and the best option is to call a professional for a proper diagnosis.
