Opening ceremony for Aena Brasil’s airport works in Minas Gerais
On 2 July 2026, Aena Brasil held an inauguration ceremony to mark the start of the expansion and modernisation works at the airports of Uberlândia, Uberaba and Montes Claros, in the state of Minas Gerais.
The upgrades represent the most extensive overhaul ever undertaken at the three terminals, increasing operating capacity, bringing infrastructure up to date, and improving comfort and safety for passengers and airlines. Attendees included the Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, the president of ANAC, Tiago Faierstein, and Aena Brasil’s chief executive officer, Santiago Yus.
Uberlândia Airport: new passenger terminal and higher capacity
Uberlândia was highlighted in particular, as it will now have a completely new passenger terminal covering 14,600 m²-an 82% increase on the previous building. The airport has doubled its capacity and will be able to handle up to 2.15 million passengers per year.
The new facilities include two boarding bridges, an expanded apron area of 30,900 m², and a larger check-in hall increasing from 435 m² to 732 m². The departures lounge is four times bigger than before, and the car park provides 500 spaces.
Uberaba and Montes Claros: expanded terminals and upgraded passenger areas
At Uberaba, the terminal has been enlarged from 1,554 m² to 4,300 m², taking annual capacity up to 222,000 passengers. The check-in hall has been expanded to 200 m² with eight desks, the inspection channel has grown fivefold, and the commercial area has been refurbished with more options. New escape areas have also been installed to strengthen safety.
Montes Claros has seen its terminal increased from 2,300 m² to 4,300 m², with capacity rising to 538,000 passengers per year. The check-in hall has doubled in size, the inspection channel has almost tripled, and the commercial area has expanded sevenfold, including provision for a VIP lounge. The new aircraft apron covers 25,000 m², and escape areas have also been implemented at the runway thresholds.
Aena investment programme, financing and total spend in Brazil
The works form part of Aena’s investment programme across 11 airports in the São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Pará airport blocks. To make these investments possible, the company arranged financing of R$ 5.7 billion at the end of 2025, with support from BNDES and Banco Santander. Including the airports in the Northeast, Aena has already invested more than R$ 12 billion in Brazil.
Current operations at Uberlândia
At present, Uberlândia operates around 35 flights a day to destinations such as São Paulo (Congonhas, Guarulhos and Viracopos), Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Seguro and Recife, handling approximately 100,000 passengers per month.
