GCAP sixth-generation fighter demonstrator: new build images as BAE Systems and Rolls Royce progress

New and significant progress has been reported on the GCAP programme, with fresh images released showing construction of the demonstrator for the sixth-generation fighter intended for the air forces of the United Kingdom, Japan and Italy. In updates published via BAE Systems’ official social-media channels, the company says assembly is already under way on a large portion of the aircraft’s structure. Separately, Rolls Royce has confirmed that ground testing of the new engines is closer, after another round of design reviews was completed.

So far, the milestones reached appear to match the timeline outlined years ago by earlier UK administrations involved in the programme-particularly under former Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. As we noted in July 2022, he told the House of Commons that the technology demonstrator was intended to make its first flight before the end of 2027, potentially from BAE Systems’ Warton site in the north of England.

Looking more closely at what the newly published images indicate, the GCAP partners have reportedly completed roughly half of the demonstrator’s fuselage at BAE Systems’ Samlesbury facility. At the same time, work at Warton is moving forward on the manufacture of the wings and stabilisers needed to complete the overall configuration.

Once those major sections are brought together-along with Eurofighter EJ200 engines, which will be used initially to power the demonstrator-the programme will be able to move into trials focused on aerodynamic concepts and on sensor technologies intended for eventual installation on the operational aircraft.

What the latest images suggest about the sixth-generation fighter design

The new configuration is notable for featuring two outward-canted vertical tail surfaces, while horizontal tailplanes are absent-a contrast with what is commonly seen on today’s fifth-generation designs. The images also show clipped wing tips and edges with slight curvature, which-if carried through into the final aircraft-would represent a shift from earlier concept artwork. Even so, the demonstrator retains the notably broad central body profile associated with these design studies.

The demonstrator is not the final GCAP aircraft

It is worth stressing that this platform is not intended to represent the definitive production design. Analysts and officials familiar with GCAP have therefore suggested it would be unsurprising to see alterations as the programme matures.

Based on recent photographs of scale models displayed at the Farnborough International Airshow, it is reasonable to infer that the finished aircraft could be larger than the demonstrator currently taking shape, and may also adopt a more complex structure to accommodate the full set of systems it is expected to integrate.

Recent updates in the development of the sixth-generation fighter

Against this backdrop, it is useful to recall that the GCAP partners have recently announced a series of developments covering both technical progress and programme management. One update concerns propulsion: as referenced earlier, it has been reported that more than a hundred small-scale component tests have been completed, with the results enabling the partners to proceed towards full ground testing and to refine the definitive design.

In addition, during the Farnborough event where the fighter mock-up was presented, the United Kingdom announced the injection of substantial funding to accelerate work on new technologies destined for the aircraft. This includes new software, artificial intelligence and digital engineering capabilities, while associated industries will also advance manufacturing through techniques such as additive manufacturing and augmented reality. According to the UK Government, this activity equates to more than 4,500 workers involved, and around 600 local companies and institutions expected to benefit.

That announcement follows a separate statement made earlier this month, when the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan confirmed the award of a second contract worth more than 4,600 million pounds to the tri-national company Edgewing to continue progressing the fighter’s development over the next 18 months. In particular, the expectation is that this period will complete the advanced concept and assessment phase, clearing the way for the final design.

Finally, and consistent with repeated comments from British, Italian and Japanese officials, the programme has also been opened to a new participant in an observer role: Canada. In that context, it was emphasised that this will give Ottawa the opportunity to study in detail the future fighter’s characteristics, the existing mechanisms for intergovernmental co-operation, and the industrial capacity devoted to the project-aiming to encourage Canada to join the development fully and contribute its own funding and technologies.
