By the end of June, the city’s soundtrack shifts. Sash windows that once banged shut against the night-time nip are propped open with books and plant pots, desk fans rumble under Zoom meetings, and chats everywhere - from the corner shop to the school gate - finish with the same refrain: “It’s too hot, isn’t it?” Heat no longer simply turns up; it moves in. It spreads through stairwells, sticks to buses, and hangs in bedrooms well past midnight. Getting any sleep becomes something you bargain for rather than something you expect. Most of us know the 3 a.m. jolt: waking clammy, then noticing the air feels denser than the duvet itself.

This isn’t the summer we remember from being kids. Something has edged out of alignment and stayed there. Forecasts and front pages now lean on a newer term - the “heat dome” - and it is quietly reshaping what it even means to live in some cities. The thought nobody wants to say outright is starting to crowd the room: what if, for a few months each year, our homes can’t be lived in?

The day the city stopped working

If you ask people when they first felt summers had changed, they rarely reach for graphs or journal articles. They describe one particular day. The day the Tube felt like a metal coffin. The afternoon the ambulance took 45 minutes because the tarmac had begun to soften. The evening the newsreader, in an eerily steady voice, said, “Don’t travel tomorrow unless you absolutely have to,” and everyone laughed - and then stayed in anyway.

Across London, Paris, Madrid, Phoenix and Delhi, recent summers have produced stories that sound unsettlingly alike. Trains crept along as rails distorted. Schools sent children home early. Hospitals saw more heat-related admissions - and not only among older people or those with existing conditions, but also among people who thought of themselves as healthy, young, almost invincible. It lands with a particular kind of sadness when a child says, “Mum, I can’t play outside, it’s too hot,” and you remember grazed knees and sunburnt noses as the texture of your own school holidays.

On days like that, a city rarely stops outright. Instead, it sags. Pavements shimmer, the air turns syrupy, and every tiny choice - what to wear, whether to use the oven, which side of the street to take - becomes a small logistical problem. You also start to notice who gets to flee and who doesn’t: some people duck into air-conditioned offices; others sit still in stifling flats, curtains closed like a never-ending Sunday afternoon.

What on earth is a “heat dome”?

“Heat dome” sounds like a prop from science fiction, something lifted from a dystopian set. In fact, it’s a stubborn, unglamorous mass of high pressure that squats over a region and won’t budge. That high-pressure system behaves like an invisible lid, keeping hot air trapped beneath and squeezing it. As the air sinks it warms further, and the dome strengthens day after day, like a saucepan with the lid clamped tight.

Beneath that lid, clouds struggle to build, breezes can die away, and the warmth simply… remains. Nights offer little respite because the ground, buildings and roads have absorbed so much energy and then leak it back slowly, like a radiator that refuses to click off. Meteorologists speak of “blocking patterns” and “anomalies”; residents describe living as if they’re inside a hairdryer. There’s something quietly terrifying about realising the weather is no longer passing through, it’s sitting on top of you.

Heat domes are not entirely new, but as the planet’s baseline temperature rises they are tending to last longer and strike harder. A hot spell that once felt like a brief episode can now extend into a hot month that feels like an extra season. When that happens in a city designed around milder conditions, you begin to see the fault lines - sometimes literally, in the fabric of buildings - in what we still think of as a “normal” summer.

Why some cities are hit harder than others

The urban heat trap

Heat isn’t experienced the same way everywhere. Thirty-five degrees in a breezy coastal village is not the same as thirty-five degrees on the top deck of a bus inching through central Birmingham. Cities generate their own microclimates: an “urban heat island” effect where concrete, asphalt and brick drink in sunlight all day and then release it back into the air. Trees, parks and rivers can blunt the impact, but plenty of neighbourhoods have more tarmac than leaves, more car parks than gardens.

Add a heat dome on top and the outcome can be punishing. During recent European heatwaves, researchers recorded differences of up to 8–10°C between dense inner-city areas and nearby, greener suburbs. That gap can mean the difference between “uncomfortable but manageable” and “genuinely dangerous if you’re old, unwell or poor”. And, honestly, few people take a thermometer reading in their own sitting room every day - so the figures only feel real when people start collapsing on buses or queuing for A&E.

Design choices matter too. Places such as Dubai or Singapore, long accustomed to oppressive heat, have widespread air-conditioning built into daily life (along with the energy demand and the climate guilt that trails behind it). By contrast, many Northern European or North American cities were shaped for cold drizzle or snow: sealed windows, darker roofs, and offices that overheat at the first proper sunshine. Buildings were designed to keep warmth in; now that assumption has become its own slow, sticky trap.

The unfair geography of heat

Inside a city, your postcode - and your circumstances - can matter more than the headline forecast. Less affluent areas often have fewer trees, heavier traffic, older housing and poorer access to ventilation or cooling. A top-floor flat with single glazing on a sun-facing street can turn into an oven by mid-afternoon, especially under a heat dome that won’t shift. Meanwhile, a ground-floor home shaded by a courtyard tree or set back from the road might be hot, but still bearable.

This split is glaring in places like Phoenix or Delhi, where money buys insulation, air conditioning and even backup generators. But quieter versions of the same pattern show up in Manchester, Lyon, Rotterdam and Berlin too. When heat alerts hit, officials ask people to look in on “vulnerable neighbours”; the reality is that vulnerability now includes anyone living in a home never meant to withstand this kind of relentless warmth. Some people can disappear for a few days. Others endure it with damp towels, open windows and the creeping sense that summer no longer belongs to them.

When your home becomes a health risk

We often picture heat through dramatic scenes: wildfires tearing across hillsides, woodland reduced to ash, skies stained orange. The more typical danger is much quieter. A bedroom that never drops below 28°C. A small kitchen where cooking pasta makes the air feel impossible to breathe. An ageing office with windows that won’t open properly. This isn’t apocalypse cinema; it’s simply… a Tuesday in July, for a growing number of people.

Clinicians speak about heat stress and dehydration, but they also see sleep loss, short tempers, and the way long-term conditions such as asthma or heart disease worsen in sustained heat. With a heat dome overhead, everyday routines start to resemble health gambles: commuting in a packed carriage with broken air-con; cleaning hotel rooms on the top floor without ventilation; delivering parcels by bike over sun-baked asphalt. You don’t need flames on the horizon to be at risk - you only need to spend long enough working in the wrong clothes at the wrong temperature.

There’s a mental burden as well. Repeated sleepless, sweltering nights chip away at patience and judgement. Parents watching toddlers break out in heat rash in overcrowded flats can feel a constant, grinding panic. Older people who recall gentler summers may feel embarrassed to admit they’re struggling because the forecast still looks deceptively “nice”. Heat rarely goes viral on social media the way floods or blizzards do, yet in many countries it quietly causes far more deaths.

The moment air conditioning stops being a luxury

During a heat dome, you can hear the city’s new background noise: the steady, low hum of air-conditioning units. For some, it’s the sound of getting through the day; for others, it feels like surrender. Many European cities avoided widespread AC for years, valuing cross-ventilation and cool cellars, and treating American-style constant cooling as needless or wasteful. That stance is now starting to fray.

For households with a little spare cash, the question is shifting from “Should we get AC?” to “Can we afford not to?” For landlords, it’s moving from “Tenants don’t need this” to “Will anyone rent here without it in five years?” At the same time, an awkward truth sits in the corner like a hot, sulking cat: air conditioning consumes vast amounts of electricity, pushes the grid harder, and - when powered by fossil fuels - intensifies the very climate change that is making heat domes more severe.

The irony is brutal. The cities that can pay to cool themselves will do it, dumping more waste heat into streets and more emissions into the atmosphere. Those that can’t will face longer, harsher periods when outdoor work becomes close to impossible for part of the day, and indoor life slows into a careful kind of forced semi-hibernation. Once AC shifts from luxury to basic survival kit, it forces difficult questions about what sort of urban future we’re creating - and who it is for.

Small hacks, big gaps

When a heat dome takes hold, ingenuity kicks in. Damp sheets draped in front of open windows. Bowls of ice positioned before bargain fans. Foil and cardboard taped inside skylights, turning bedrooms into makeshift spacecraft. Cold showers taken at strange times. These scrappy routines feel oddly intimate - people trying to claw back a little control from weather that has started to feel hostile.

Some cities are also racing towards larger-scale measures: planting more street trees, painting roofs white to bounce back sunlight, opening “cooling centres” in libraries and community halls, and shifting working hours so refuse collectors and builders can start before dawn and finish before the worst heat arrives. Urban planners talk about “greening”, “shading”, “permeable surfaces” - unflashy language that, taken together, points to a different way of designing streets and homes.

But between the improvised fixes at home and the big plans on PowerPoint slides, there’s a gap you can feel. Not every landlord will retrofit or add insulation. Not every council will plant enough trees - or plant them where they’re needed most. And heat domes aren’t a future threat; they’re already happening. People crack jokes about “Mediterranean summers” while quietly ordering thicker blackout curtains and portable fans online at midnight, aware that these are no longer décor choices, but tools for getting through.

When “unlivable” stops being a metaphor

“Unlivable” is a word that gets used too easily, often as clickbait. Yet in certain places, under certain conditions, it becomes grimly literal. Researchers talk about “wet-bulb” temperatures - a metric combining heat and humidity - beyond which even a fit, shaded, well-hydrated person cannot cool down. During severe heatwaves, parts of the world have already come close to those thresholds. At that point, preparedness and grit don’t matter; physiology sets the rules.

Most major cities are not at that edge - at least not yet. But “unlivable” can arrive well before the body hits its absolute limit. It might look like July workdays where it’s no longer safe to be outside for normal hours. It might mean public transport becomes a health hazard for days. It might mean children, older people and anyone with a chronic condition can’t leave home for stretches without risking collapse. A city that only really operates before 10 a.m. and after 8 p.m. may still be “habitable” in theory - just not in any meaningfully humane sense.

There’s a quieter, emotional kind of unlivable too. The parent who starts to dread summer rather than anticipate it. The café owner who closes for a week every heatwave because their tiny kitchen becomes dangerous. The renters who obsessively check forecasts before signing a new tenancy, scanning for top floors and south-facing windows as if reading a medical report. When a season you once loved begins to feel like a threat, your relationship with home changes in a fundamental way.

Where do we go from here?

Cities won’t all reach their tipping points together. Some will adapt quickly, building shade, water and resilience into pavements and planning rules. Others will limp along, stacking hacks on top of flawed design, hoping the next heat dome won’t be quite as severe as the last. A few places already pushed close to the limit may begin, quietly, to lose people as those with options seek cooler, higher ground. Climate migration doesn’t always look like dramatic journeys by boat; sometimes it’s simply a family choosing not to move back after one punishing summer.

Alongside the bleakness, though, there’s another picture worth keeping in view. Residents turning car parks into pocket parks. Councils testing shaded bus stops and misting systems. Neighbours checking in on one another, sharing fans or offering a spare room with decent airflow. What fails in one city becomes a workable idea somewhere else. The heat dome may be a lid, but it’s also a spotlight - revealing, with uncomfortable clarity, which parts of urban life were built on the assumption that the weather would more or less behave.

The future of summer in our cities is not fully written yet. The science is clear about where unchecked warming leads, but the specifics - who adapts, who is protected, who is left to swelter - are still being decided. With each new summer, as the first headlines murmur “record-breaking”, we’re being pushed towards a difficult question: not only how much heat we can physically survive, but what kind of heat we’re willing to call home.
