Plastic Roof Sealant: What Acrylic Plastic Cement Is and How to Apply It

Plastic roof sealant is an acrylic paste designed to fill hairline cracks, joints and other vulnerable areas where water can get in. Applied before waterproofing, it bonds to the surface, tolerates small movements in the structure and helps stop rainwater reaching the inside of the concrete slab.

What is acrylic plastic cement?

Acrylic plastic cement is a thick, usually water-based patching compound used to repair small openings on external surfaces. It can be spread straight on with a filling knife or trowel and is typically used as a preparation step before the waterproofing layer is applied.

It is commonly used on:

  • Surface cracks in concrete slabs
  • Joints and seams between different materials
  • The bases of water tanks, pipe penetrations and rooflights
  • Junctions between walls, roof tiles and roof structures
  • Small spots where moisture is beginning to seep in

Why does the material cope with rain and temperature changes?

Once it has dried, the acrylic formulation retains a degree of flexibility. This allows the layer to follow minor expansion and contraction caused by heat, cold and normal roof movement, without immediately losing adhesion.

Some products also include reinforcing fibres, which increase the paste’s strength and help bridge the crack. Rain resistance, however, relies on full curing: the sealant should not be applied during rainfall or onto a soaked substrate.

How to apply the sealant directly into a crack

The substrate must be sound, dry and free from dust, grease, loose material or flaking waterproofing. Spreading the paste over dirt can prevent proper bonding and may cause the seal to detach along with the old layer.

  • Open up and clean the crack carefully
  • Remove loose particles with a brush
  • Push the product into the opening using a filling knife
  • Smooth the paste level over the edges of the crack
  • In higher-stress areas, place reinforcing mesh between two coats
  • Wait for the stated drying time before waterproofing

When does the paste not solve the problem on its own?

Acrylic plastic cement is intended for typical cracks and localised repairs. Wide openings, holes, broken pieces or cracks that keep growing need to be corrected with suitable building repair materials before the patching compound is used.

Some warning signs suggest the leak may have a deeper cause:

  • A crack that returns soon after the repair
  • Concrete that is breaking away or showing rust staining
  • Standing water due to insufficient falls or drainage
  • Damp ingress spread across a large area of the ceiling
  • Noticeable movement between slabs, walls or roof tiles

Sealing works best before waterproofing

The sealant deals with specific points, but it does not replace the roof’s full waterproof layer. Once the repair has dried, applying a compatible system protects the entire surface and reduces water entry through pores and other cracks that are not yet easy to see.

The outcome depends on cleanliness, the thickness applied and following the drying time, which can vary by product and weather conditions. When used on a properly prepared base, the acrylic patching compound reinforces cracks and joints before rain turns minor defects into drips and damp stains.
