Andalusia is taking an unusual approach to improving road safety. Rather than relying on speed cameras, the Spanish region is laying a new kind of smart and sustainable asphalt called MASAI.

Developed entirely within the region, this material blends advanced technology with environmentally friendly design, with the aim of changing day-to-day driving across Andalusia.
Built-in sensors and predictive maintenance
MASAI includes embedded sensors that track vehicle speed, the condition of the road surface and traffic levels in real time. With that information, road managers can anticipate when and where work will be required, making maintenance more targeted and effective. It can also help curb speeding indirectly, by enabling closer monitoring of how vehicles are actually behaving on the network.
Sustainable asphalt?
MASAI is designed to be greener as well. It is manufactured at lower temperatures-between 110 and 130 °C-which can cut carbon dioxide emissions by up to 20%. Its mix also contains a proportion of recycled asphalt.
The name draws inspiration from the African Maasai tribe, known for its respect for nature. A key aim is to make better use of existing resources, reduce waste and extend the service life of roads. Early trials on the A-92 in Almería have already produced encouraging results, with fewer repairs needed and a smaller environmental footprint.
Looking ahead, MASAI is expected to be rolled out on other motorways and also on urban routes, where reduced noise-by up to 3 decibels-could improve life for people living close to heavily trafficked areas.
Interest is no longer limited to the local authorities: international delegations are already examining how to apply Andalusia’s technology, including Formula 1.
