PS councillors in Gaia accuse Luís Filipe Menezes over 4,000 homes promise

PS councillors in Gaia say the Mayor, Luís Filipe Menezes, has kept the promise of building 4,000 homes “at square one”, and they are challenging the PSD/CDS-PP/IL administration to publish, in public and with clear deadlines, funding and specific sites, its plan to deliver the new housing.

“So far, there is no programme, no agreed funding, and no new locations announced,” the Socialists state in a press release, in which they criticise the Social Democratic mayor for “maintaining absolute silence about the main promise he presented to people in Gaia on housing – the construction of 4,000 new homes”.

Socialist councillor João Paulo Correia argues that “there is absolutely nothing new. It is a promise that has not moved beyond that and remains at square one. 4,000 homes were promised during the campaign and, eight months later, not a word on how, when or where”.

Council response expected at the municipal housing handover in Jardim do Morro

Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Gaia City Council said clarifications on the issue would be provided on Tuesday, during a municipal housing handover ceremony scheduled for 11:00 at Jardim do Morro.

Previous terms of office

In the same statement, the PS also says that “all the public housing that is now moving forward in Vila Nova de Gaia originates from work carried out in previous terms – an investment of around €143 million that planned the construction and refurbishment of hundreds of homes in Grijó, Madalena, Laborim and Pedroso, which are now beginning to reach families”.

For that reason, the councillors accuse Luís Filipe Menezes of “simply cutting the ribbon on projects and housing he inherited from Socialist terms in office”.
