As pasta cooks, the water quickly reaches temperatures close to boiling. If that liquid goes directly down the drain, it hits the pipework almost immediately and without any cooling. In many homes, those pipes are made from PVC - a plastic that is far more sensitive to heat than many people realise.
Why near-boiling water is a problem for PVC pipework
From around 60 to 70 °C, PVC can begin to soften. Pasta water is often close to 100 °C. That leaves little margin for error and creates a high load.
