Why the “safe” indoor temperature matters more than you think

With energy bills still rising, plenty of households turn the thermostat down and rely on extra jumpers and blankets. It can look like a sensible way to save money, but it may leave both your home’s fabric and your breathing less protected. When indoor air is humid and surfaces are cold, mould gets exactly what it needs.

Energy specialist Ben Gallizzi, speaking to UK media, highlights a straightforward but firm principle: don’t let indoor temperatures sit too low for too long. Once the temperature drops past a threshold, the air holds less water vapour - and the surplus moisture ends up on the coldest areas of your home.

Maintaining rooms between about 18°C and 21°C creates a “comfort zone” where the body works well and mould struggles to get started.

In living rooms and home-working spaces, 18–21°C supports focus and basic wellbeing. In bedrooms, many specialists still recommend staying close to the lower end of that range, rather than far beneath it. As soon as temperatures slide towards 15–16°C, the balance starts tipping towards condensation and mould spores.

When temperatures drop below 16°C, the physics turns against you

Gallizzi cautions against allowing indoor temperatures to fall below roughly 15–16°C. At those levels, moisture already present in the air begins turning into condensation on colder surfaces: external walls, window frames, metal radiators, ceiling corners, and the spaces behind wardrobes.

Those tiny beads of water can look insignificant at first - but they are not. They can drive a chain reaction that accelerates faster than many people expect.

  • Moisture condenses on cold walls and windows.
  • Surfaces remain damp for hours, particularly in rooms that are barely heated.
  • Dust and organic matter cling to the wet areas.
  • Mould spores settle, take hold, and start spreading.

If you regularly see misted windows in the morning and darkening corners on external walls, your home is sitting in the danger zone for recurring mould.

Early on, you may only spot pale grey smudges or small black specks around window seals. With time, the marks spread, paint starts to lift, and plaster can break down. The expense of repainting or replastering frequently exceeds the money saved by cutting heating too sharply.

Keep a stable baseline temperature

Heating the home hard for short bursts and then letting it go cold for long stretches usually backfires. Walls cool down, warm up, then cool again - and that repeating cycle keeps surfaces in a condensation-prone state.

A steadier baseline is typically more effective. Many energy advisers suggest:

  • A background temperature of around 18°C in most rooms.
  • Slightly warmer settings, up to 20–21°C, in living spaces during the evening.
  • Small reductions overnight, but not below roughly 16°C in occupied rooms.

A consistently warm wall is less likely to “sweat” than one that swings from icy to toasty several times a day.

Ventilation: short, sharp and regular

In winter, opening windows can feel like throwing money away, but focused ventilation can remove moisture more quickly than many people assume. Instead of leaving a window on the latch all day, aim for brief, planned air changes.

  • Open windows on opposite sides for 5–10 minutes to create a cross-breeze.
  • Do this after showering, cooking or drying clothes.
  • Keep internal doors closed during these high-moisture activities so steam stays contained.

Extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms also make a difference - as long as they’re used properly. Keep them running for several minutes after you’ve finished, rather than switching them off as you leave the room.

Small daily habits that slow mould growth

Temperature control and ventilation do most of the heavy lifting, but day-to-day routines can add up over a long winter.

  • Wipe down visible condensation on windows and sills in the morning.

Once you spot black specks or patches, you’re no longer just preventing mould - you’re trying to contain it. Cleaning the surface alone rarely fixes things if the moisture conditions that caused it are unchanged.

For small and recent areas, many people use dedicated mould sprays or suitably diluted cleaning solutions. Wearing gloves and a mask is a sensible precaution, particularly for anyone with asthma or allergies. Soft furnishings and other porous items that are badly affected often need to be thrown away.

Reading your home like a thermometer and a hygrometer

For many households, the real turning point in stopping the mould cycle comes from watching how each room behaves. An inexpensive digital thermometer–hygrometer can help quietly in the background. It displays both temperature and relative humidity, making it easier to spot trends before mould shows up.

As a broad guideline, indoor relative humidity is ideally kept between 40% and 60%. Brief spikes above that after a shower are normal; staying above 70% for hours or days is a warning sign. If humidity rises whenever a room’s temperature falls towards 15–16°C, that’s a clear signal you’re moving into the higher-risk zone described by experts.

For tenants and homeowners, those readings can inform practical choices: which rooms need a little more heating, where a dehumidifier would be most useful, whether a large wardrobe should be moved away from an external wall, and how to ventilate at the right times without losing too much warmth.

These days, the winter heating discussion rarely ends with comfort alone. With energy prices fluctuating and weather patterns shifting, homes are under fresh strain.
