A former health centre in Campanhã, Porto has been converted into a residential building. The project, backed by more than €1.7 million in support from Recovery and Resilience Plan funds, resulted in eight new homes: four two-bedroom flats (T2) and four three-bedroom flats (T3).

The property is on Rua de Matias de Albuquerque and was upgraded through a contract led by Porto Vivo, the city’s urban rehabilitation company. The work forms part of the wider strategy to bring homes to the affordable rental market.

Design changes and the 1st Right programme

According to the City Council, the scheme-under the direction of architect Diana Martins-required extensive alterations to meet residential standards, improving comfort as well as ventilation and natural light. The council also notes that the building “once again fulfils an essential role in the city – meeting the need for housing”. The draw for the homes, under the 1st Right programme, has already taken place.

Impact on the city

The council adds that this was about more than renovating a building: it marked a change of use with a direct effect on city life, turning a disused facility into new housing options for households on middle incomes.
