Britain’s First Map of Roadless Areas and the European badger

A European badger typically requires around half a square mile (1.3 square kilometres) to forage, rear cubs, and make it through the winter. For a nation that places more than a quarter of its land under protection, that might seem achievable. However, Britain’s first nationwide map of roadless areas reveals a far more challenging reality.

Mapping roadless areas

Researchers at Cardiff University, led by ecologist Sarah Raymond, produced the first comprehensive picture of British land that sits beyond the influence of roads. Their analysis went beyond the tarmac itself to include the broader corridor of disruption created by each road.

That disturbance reaches well beyond the verge: traffic noise, artificial lighting, polluted runoff, and animals deliberately steering clear of vehicles all extend into surrounding habitat-an influence scientists describe as the road effect zone.

To capture this, the team modelled three alternative buffers around every paved road: roughly 100 metres, 500 metres, and 1 kilometre. Land outside each buffer was treated as road-free.

Using the widest buffer (1 kilometre), only about a fifth of Britain remained classed as road-free, and even that was split into more than 6,000 separate fragments. In other words, extensive wild areas have been sliced into disconnected remnants.

How small they are

The central issue is the scale of those remnants. Over seven in ten patches came in smaller than half a square mile (1.3 square kilometres), while the median patch size was about 8 square kilometres.

That is far below the European pattern, where an average patch is closer to 47 square kilometres. Britain stands out as an extreme example, though it is not unique.

Separate research tracking roads in tropical forests repeatedly finds many more routes than appear in official datasets, with new incursions pushing further into areas that were previously road-free.

Within Britain, England-where population density is highest-showed the smallest average patch size at under 1 square mile, yet it also contained more patches than any other part of the island.

The largest continuous road-free tracts were concentrated further north, across the Scottish Highlands and within Cairngorms National Park, where sparse settlement leaves fewer roads.

Too small for badgers

When the mapped patches were assessed against the wildlife living in them, the strongest message emerged. Mammals depend on a home range-the area required to find food and breeding opportunities.

Raymond’s team compared patch sizes with the home ranges of the ten mammals most frequently killed on British roads. This kind of direct match between a roadless-area map and specific species had not been done before, and the result was stark.

A European badger needs roughly half a square mile (1.3 square kilometres), yet only about a quarter of patches met or exceeded that size. For the red fox, only around a third of patches were large enough.

This means that much of Britain’s quieter ground is too small to contain even one badger’s range. Where an animal cannot fit its territory inside a single patch, it must cross roads repeatedly-helping to explain why badgers and foxes feature so heavily in roadkill statistics.

Small animals cross too

Smaller species appear to fare better at first glance, although the figures can flatter to deceive. Patches were large enough for a grey squirrel’s range roughly four-fifths of the time, and for a hedgehog’s range about two-thirds of the time.

But home-range estimates drawn on a map can be misleading. An otter may occupy a modest area in total, yet it often moves as a narrow corridor 5 to 40 kilometres along a river, encountering roads time after time.

Hedgehogs, too, can cover substantial distances: in a single night, one may travel more than 1.6 kilometres. Being small does not prevent risky encounters with traffic.

Location within a patch also changes exposure. Animals living close to the boundary are never far from a road, and as patches shrink, a greater proportion of the population ends up near an edge.

Home ranges also vary through the year and are typically larger for males, so the pressure is uneven across individuals. Beyond Britain, one study of the global road network concludes that the ecological footprint of road traffic continues to expand worldwide.

Inside the patches

The road-free land that persists in Britain tends to be a specific kind of landscape. The largest patches are dominated by rough upland grazing and heather moorland, alongside areas of peat bog and blocks of conifer plantation.

These are generally open, managed or grazed environments rather than sheltered, structurally rich habitats. On a standard wildlife-richness index, the bigger patches scored slightly lower rather than higher.

That could look like a poor outcome for road-free areas, yet the researchers caution against taking the score at face value. A peat bog can rank low for species counts while still locking away carbon for centuries and reducing flooding risks downstream.

Legal protection is inconsistent as well. Almost half of all road-free land already falls within some form of protected designation, but the remainder-more than half-does not.

And even where protections exist, they can be undermined at the margins. Some reserves that seem intact on a map are in fact bisected by roads running directly through them.

Reconnecting the map

Before this analysis, Britain lacked a complete inventory of its roadless areas. It was also unclear just how little of that land could realistically support a fox or a badger.

With the map now available, the conclusion is unambiguous: there are many patches, but they are too small and too fragmented to function reliably as refuges.

This shifts what conservation planning can realistically target. Unprotected road-free patches together amount to roughly a tenth of Britain’s land area-space that could be brought into the protected network and, crucially, linked up.

The interactive, searchable map indicates which fragments could be combined to create larger, connected areas where wildlife can move more safely.

For a badger that currently has to find its half a square mile (1.3 square kilometres) on the far side of a road, reconnecting habitat can be the difference between a viable home range and a nightly gamble with traffic.

Britain now has its first clear map of quiet ground. The tougher challenge is preventing those remaining pieces from being whittled down any further.
